I get with the machine translator that Elizabeth, the heroine, is an English aristocrat who comes working under a false identity in the castle of some imaginary principality. She met a gentleman called Tao (is that his name?) a few years ago at a horse riding club and they are reunited in this country. Behind Tao’s haughtiness and arrogance, Elizabeth discovers an unexpected seriousness that she finds somewhat sweet…

I knew Matsukawa-sensei for her Boy’s Love mangas under the pen-name Yuuya. I’m not a fan, but I like a lot her Endless Rain book. The least I can say is that the mangaka’s art style is quite recognizable, which is how I immediately knew it was Yuuya among the HQc & Rc artists. Ouhi no Kaidan seems to be a sweet prince and princess type of story. I’ve wanted this book mainly because I find Matsukawa-sensei’s art especially pretty for this one. I know I’m shallow, so what?!

Kindan no otomeI’ve purchased the first book a few months ago and finally decided to buy the rest of the series. It’s hard for a compulsive collector as myself to have uncompleted series in my collection.
Details about Kindan no Otome — the first volume — can be found at the page compiling my HQc & Rc raws.

  1. Hime Kishi no KoiAuthor: Elizabeth Werner
    Artist: HIDAKA Nanao | 日高七緒
English title: The Princess Knight’s Love
Japanese title: Hime Kishi no Koi |

The machine translator makes no sense. I’m guessing the princess knight Juanitta (?) is supposedly one of the 3 forbidden maidens mentioned by some fateful prophecy. She and strategist Lance/Reims (what’s his name?) become allies to take on the role as decoys for the couple in the first book.

  2. Ryuu Kishi to Ai no MeikyuuEnglish title: The Dragon Knight and Labyrinth of Love
Japanese title: Ryuu Kishi to Ai no Meikyuu |

Again, machine translation is rather confusing. I’m guessing Petula (?), the youngest sister, and the black knight Yuri (?) have to make a journey together. Yuri grew up in solitude with secret wounds and Petula, sheltered and hidden because of the prophecy.
Now that I can look at the whole trilogy, it looks not bad. Yuri is quite intriguing and stands out from the other characters. There are lots of actions and battles, though I’m used to shounen and seinen action mangas, so the drawing does not impress me. I’ve already said that I’m not fond of Hidaka-sensei’s art style, and this trilogy won’t make me change my mind. Yet, some panels are mesmerizing, especially when Yuri appears, and overall it looks like a nice series if a bit too predictable to my liking.

Unfolds the story of the brilliant Phantom Thief.

A newspaper reporter Michel chases him,
And by chance, knows his identity.
However, the secret of a woman,
Giganti, at the same time, notices…

Please God, bring some nice translator to this series. I don’t understand Japanese, but just looking at the pictures, I love it! The first volume is my favourite because, you know, Albert is dark haired, and I prefer dark haired heroes. Furthermore, Albert is dashing and naughty and so much fun. When I was first browsing his volume, the story and characters were so lively I could hear the soundtracks of Meitantei Hōmuzu and Lupin Sansei in my head!
And at the same time, Albert’s character reminds me of the lovely 70s live series Arsène Lupin. I can’t forget that ending song Gentleman-Cambrioleur performed by Jacques Dutronc. When I was a kid, I had a crush on Georges Descrières impersonating Arsène Lupin, oozing mischief and charm.

In Hashimoto-sensei’s trilogy, despite my preference for Albert, I must say that his siblings are interesting too: Camille, delightfully strong and self-confident for a woman, and Theodor — that’s the name I found for the youngest brother in Japanese reviews — a flirty sweetheart. But the last volume looks a bit weak and muddled, compared to the previous 2 stories. Yet, it’s still an enjoyable conclusion to a fun series full of racy and lovable characters.

I think Hashimoto-sensei’s art style truly shines when she draws stories set in 18th or 19th centuries Europe. You can actually see how detailed her illustrations can be and how the cuteness of her art fits well Regency era or Victorian period. Plus she draws very expressive and dynamic faces, especially in comedic scenes. I just love an artist who can give me in the same book a nice balance between drama and comedy.

PS: I almost forgot this fun trivia about the series that totally makes me crack. Throughout the 3 volumes, the artist inserted pieces of news articles. But hey, it’s in French and I AM FRENCH. I wanted to ask sensei who got this genius idea of putting French texts unrelated to the manga topics! There must be some architecture and Alsatian art history nerd among Hashimoto-sensei’s acquaintances. I was most amused when in one of those articles, the dishwasher and other modern apparatus were mentioned. LOL at the busted 19th century setting.
