Joyeux Nouvel An Chinois en retard !

Happy belated Chinese New Year! It’s my first post for 2012. Real life has been tough these past months. I haven’t drawn for ages — I mean really trying to draw seriously, not some deformed doodles once or twice every six months.

I’ve checked the date scribbled in the previous sketch I made for Kaze’s BL contest for Lost Memories manga: it was on May 2011.

Concours Lost Memories

Before that, I hadn’t drawn for over a year. This time, I’ve noticed a couple of weeks ago a contest at Kana Blog, Habillez le blog Kana avec vos créations !, for a temporary background of their site and decided to give it a try — and see if my hands aren’t too rusty. So here’s the entry I’ve submitted to Kana:

As you can see, the Chinese New Year inspired me this piece. Initially, the illustration should have looked a little more close-up like this:

It’s only been less than two years ago when I started working on blending my sketching with manipulating images.

Once you’ve began testing a graphic art software possibilities, you want to see if you’re able to do something with living beings. Meaning human beings.

When I could finally understand what was a layer and a filter, I made several attempts with the Gimp.

I’ve tried first with virtual creatures, animals and landscapes. That was not as easy as I thought it’d be.

When I first discovered that my computer could actually draw better than me, I felt betrayed. *laugh*

In fact, I wanted very much to create illustrations like the cool digital art I could see everywhere. I like drawing… but only faces. I suck at drawing bodies—hands make me feel like gouging my eyes out.

But sketching with a pencil is okay and kinda relaxing. Painting is a real pain in my butt. Many times I’ve ruined a not-so-bad sketch by painting it with watercolors. You’ve already seen the results in my resolution post.
I’m a disaster as a painter.

The first graphic art software I bought was Corel something. Took me ages to understand how to use it. But since then, I’ve quit painting with traditional brushes.
I was just so glad I didn’t have to touch them again.

And when I finally learned how to manipulate photos, the real fun started for me.
